Practical year

The aim of the practical year is for final-year students on the Master’s degree in Human Medicine to build upon the knowledge, skills, abilities and professional conduct learned over their previous years of study (i.e. during their Bachelor’s degree in Medical Science and the first two years of the Master’s degree in Human Medicine) in order to qualify for postgraduate medical education and training.

  • Total duration of 48 weeks (60 ECTS credits), beginning in August
  • PY subdivided into three elements (tertials)
    • Internal Medicine
    • Perioperative Medicine
    • Elective subject
  • These elements can be completed in a hospital department, clinical institute, outpatient clinic or teaching practice. Each student is supported by a mentor (or a substitute if the mentor is absent) from the training institution.
  • Training during the PY consists of:
    • Practical clinical activity
    • Structured instruction
    • Self-guided study
    • Keeping a logbook/portfolio (self-assessment)
    • Documented reviews (workplace assessment)
  • Individual departments, institutes, outpatient clinics and teaching practices are accredited by KL as training institution.
  • During their time at the training institution, students are not engaged in an employment relationship within the meaning of labour law; instead, they retain the status of students under labour law throughout their PY.
  • The main focus is on supervised patient care and working with/on patients. The emphasis is on hands-on work in terms of deliberate practice and carrying out real tasks that consolidate clinical thinking and acting and foster professional behaviour within a team and towards patients and their relatives.
  • Participation in further education and training events is also an essential part of this period.
  • In the final week of each term at KL, various courses take place and students undertake reviews of what they have learnt and sit written and oral examinations.
