Master’s programme in Human Medicine
The Master’s programme in Human Medicine is the second part of medical studies in line with the Bologna model. It provides scientific training for the medical profession and teaches the skills necessary for independent medical practice.
The Master’s degree in Human Medicine builds on the Bachelor’s degree in Medical Science. It serves to impart the knowledge, skills and competencies necessary for independent medical practice. In addition, the course covers the key competencies of the medical expert – professional conduct, communication and collaboration with those in different roles, along with other key qualities for the medical profession. Upon completion of the degree, graduates are awarded the title Dr. med. univ.

Students receive a broad medical education, as the program conveys extensive knowledge with a strong focus on practice-oriented teaching and examines specific human medical issues from an early stage. It focuses on multidisciplinary healthcare content.
The integrative education that students receive, with a particular emphasis on technology and economics, means that they graduate with considerable cross-disciplinary communication and problem-solving skills, excellent clinical aptitude and the ability to make responsible decisions in an advanced healthcare system. The course is notable for its strong practical focus, thanks to a high proportion of lecturers from the university hospitals of St. Pölten, Krems and Tulln, and the presence of external specialists from the fields of medical practice, research and teaching.
Programme structure
In the first and second year of the programme, students’ hone their clinical skills and abilities in small group classes as part of the modules. The specific healthcare content focuses on issues that medical professionals often encounter in the real world. A 48-week ‘practical year’ takes place in the third year of the programme and provides students with hands-on clinical training.
Final examination
To obtain their Master’s degree in Human Medicine, students must submit an academic paper in the form of a Master’s thesis. Students can select a specific area from the entire spectrum of medicine as the topic of their thesis, or choose from the specialist subjects Professional Development, Science and Research, Public Health and Health Economics (new MPR on 10 October 2022). A forum will be made available to showcase topics and provide inspiration. In their own scientific courses, students develop specific methodological knowledge that enables them to develop a project study plan for their Master’s thesis. They can develop specific expertise in this area by attending free electives. The students flesh out their project under expert supervision using a study protocol. Once this has been approved, the student can put their plan into action and produce their Master’s thesis. After the thesis has been finalised and undergone an initial assessment by the supervisor and second assessment by an independent expert, the student presents their work in the form of a thesis defence before a panel of specialists. All Master’s theses at KL are checked for plagiarism.
